Meet the HAL fleet
The entire Holland America family is quite spread across the globe and consists of 13 ships, 14 after the Koningsdam joins the fleet in February 2016. Of these, there are four which can be spotted in Kiwi or Aussie ports, sailing from cities including Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle to bring a range of itineraries and destinations - often comprising longer cruises with plenty of port calls. Click through to each ship for more details and deck plans.
Maasdam: This mid-sized ship mixes innovations and tradition well, with a state-of-the-art Explorations Cafe and trendy Mix Lounge adding to the more classic charms. She cruises from Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne for a short summer season, visiting mostly the coastal cities of New Zealand and Australia while they are at their sunny best.
Noordam: Slightly more glamorous than many of her fleetmates, the Noordam has a three-storey atrium which is a lovely sight. She sails back and forth between Sydney and Auckland during her time spent Down Under, with the occasional jaunt into the islands of the South Pacific.
Volendam: Launched in 1999 and having undergone a “Signature of Excellence†makeover in 2006, the Volendam is fresh and up to date with the Holland America favourite features. Her casual atmosphere is well suited to adventurous cruisers - as are her itineraries! Australia and New Zealand are just two of the destinations on her schedule which also takes in Alaska and Asia.
Amsterdam: With far-flung destinations and a multi-million dollar art collections, the Amsterdam is quite a sophisticated globe trotter. This is another ship which expertly mixes contemporary and classic, teak decks and digital workshops. World Cruises make up a decent chunk of her time, and she is seen Down Under every now and then, offering intrepid voyages.
The Holland America experience
If you want all the modern bells and whistles when it comes to onboard entertainment - surf simulators, waterparks, rock climbing, rowdy bars and the like - then a Holland America cruise is perhaps not for you. However, if you want low-key evenings and interesting education-oriented entertainment you will feel right at home. The line has a focus on destinations, the ship simply providing a pleasantly luxurious way to travel between them in true nautical style.
Although the atmosphere is more relaxing than busy, Holland America passengers are never short of things to do if they want them. Reading in the Explorations Cafe, cultivating new skills in the Culinary Arts Center, attending workshops and lectures, taking a dip in the pool and browsing the art collections are just a few of the possibilities. The spa and gym help passengers to take care of themselves - and they can even get in a gentle stroll on the promenade deck.
In the elegant main dining rooms, Holland America cruisers can dine at set times or on their own schedule. Casual options vary fleetwide but include buffet, grill and pizzeria, along with complimentary room service. Special touches like hot soup served on deck in Alaska and daily afternoon tea service are part of the HAL charm. For extra-special occasions, the fleet has a few venues which incur a nominal fee - these include the Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto.
