Island Princess Overview

Launched in 2003, the Island Princess is one of two Princess Coral-Class cruise ships designed specifically for sailings through the Panama Canal. Both Island Princess and her sister ship, the Coral Princess, are the maximum possible size for Panama Canal cruises. She was christened by Olympic Gold Medalists Jaime Salé and David Pelletier.

The Island Princess specs
This beautiful vessel weighs 92,000 tonnes, measures 964 feet in length and spans 11 decks. She can accommodate 2,124 passengers and 900 crew. Her cruising speed is 21 knots.

Inside the Island Princess
The Island Princess is tastefully decorated in various colours with smooth dark wooden finishings. One of the design highlights is the four storey atrium. The social heart of the ship, the atrium sparkles everywhere you look, from the glass elevators to the glistening lights.

Most of the public spaces were given a makeover during a May 2015 refurbishment, so the interior feels modern and contemporary. More than 100 new staterooms were also added during this time.

Things to do on board the Island Princess
Day or night, rain or shine - whatever the time of day or the weather, you can be sure to find a form of entertainment to suit your interests. Whether you prefer organised social activities (think trivia and pool games), or quiet time (relaxing by the pool or getting pampered at the day spa), there are a range of activities to choose from.

In particular, the Island Princess boasts a great enrichment programme, with a wide variety of classes on everything from upcoming ports to workshops to enhance your computer skills. The cruise ship is also home to an excellent theatre and casino.

Island Princess restaurants and bars
One of the best things about being on a cruise is the chance to sample a wide variety of delicious dishes. And in this area, the Island Princess definitely does not disappoint! Be prepared to be dazzled by the impressive array of international cuisines available, from lively Spanish fare to tasty Turkish delicacies. Between the two main dining rooms, the lavish buffet and the several specialty restaurants, you'll have no trouble finding food to suit your tastes.

The bars on board are equally as pleasing, serving high quality wines, beers, spirits and nonalcoholic beverages. Most of the bars and lounges are open from lunchtime onwards and serve as excellent places to socialise with newfound friends, play a game of cards or watch the world go by. Later in the evening, many bars are home to live entertainment and dancing.

Island Princess itineraries and shore excursions
The Island Princess splits her time between the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the United States and the Canary Islands. The shore excursions available will therefore depend on your chosen destination, but you can expect an excellent range of tours at each port. Some examples include a gondola ride in Venice, zip-lining in Puntarenas and whale watching in Vancouver.

Cabins on board the Island Princess

There are 987 cabins on board the Island Princess. These range in size from 156 square feet (interior) to 470 square feet (suite). Standard cabins are all equipped with essential amenities including a television, mini-fridge, phone, safe, writing desk and chair. They also come with a few nice bonuses, such as 100 percent Egyptian cotton sheets and 'Sleepeezee' mattresses.

There are four categories of suites; Mini, Vista, Premium and Penthouse. In addition to offering more space and better views, the suites come with an array of extra perks, including complimentary shoe polishing and laundry, as well as unlimited use of the Thermal Suite at the Lotus Spa.

Entertainment on board the Island Princess cruise ship

The Island Princess by day
While it's tempting to spend your entire cruise holiday by the pool, it's worth making the most of the wide variety of activities available on board the Island Princess. From art auctions and trivia games to wine tastings and craft classes, the Island Princess boasts a truly impressive enrichment programme. If you're in the mood to be entertained, the Princess Theater is often home to culinary demonstrations and port lectures during the day.

Those looking for some quality downtime will feel right at home in The Sanctuary, the ship's exclusive adults-only retreat. Relax and unwind while being waited on hand and foot by 'serenity stewards'. Other great places to relax include the library, internet cafe and Explorer's Lounge.

Pools, spas and fitness facilities on board the Island Princess
There are four pools and five whirlpool jacuzzis on the Island Princess, including a children's splash pool. One of the pools, the Lotus, can be enjoyed rain or shine thanks to a retractable roof. The Lido Pool, on the other hand, comes to life at night for Movies Under the Stars.

When it comes to pampering. look no further than the Lotus Spa and Beauty Salon. Here you will find a range of spa treatments, such as massages and facials, as well as steam rooms, heated ceramic loungers and a sauna.

If you're looking to maintain your fitness on board, head to the Lotus Spa Health & Fitness Center on Deck 6. The gym is equipped with cardio machines and free weights, and experienced fitness instructors are also on-hand to teach group classes, such as yoga and spinning.

Island Princess nightlife
When the sun sets, the ship really comes to life. After dinner head to the gorgeous Princess Theater to watch an original production show; there are two scheduled performances every night, one at 8.15pm and the other at 10.15pm. Another great venue for live entertainment is the Explorer's Lounge. Here the performances vary depending on the schedule, ranging from comedians to cover bands.

All of the bars and lounges have their own look and feel. The Wheelhouse Bar is nautical themed and reminiscent of a yacht club, while the glamorous Crooner's Bar serves some of the best martinis at sea. One of the best spots for nightlife, however, is the Princess Casino. This has a Parisian theme - as soon as you step in you'll feel like you're in Europe.

If you'd prefer a more relaxed environment, settle down to watch some action on the big screen at Movies Under the Stars. This famous Princess feature is always a hit - be sure to make the most of the complimentary popcorn as you enjoy the film.

The Island Princess for families
Families are made to feel very welcome on board the Island Princess. They can make their own fun at the splash pool or in one of the many family-friendly eateries, or parents can enrol their children in an activity programme at the Youth Center on Deck 12.

Activities are organised by age like on every other Princess ship, with three different groups: Princess Pelicans for ages 3 to 7, Shockwaves for ages 8 to 12 and Remix for ages 13 to 17. The Pelicans are kept well entertained with activities such as arts and crafts and pizza parties, while the Shockwaves enjoy games like sports tournaments and talent shows. Teens have a little more freedom and their own designated hangout, which features the latest video games and movies. They can also participate in organised activities, such as dance classes, formal dinners and DJ workshops.

Although there is no private in-cabin babysitting available in the evening, parents can enrol their children in group babysitting. This service comes with a small hourly cost and runs from 10pm to 1am - spaces may be limited so be sure to book in advance.

Interior Stateroom

The Interior stateroom is approximately 156 to 166 square feet and richly appointed with fine amenities. Some also have pullman beds to accommodate 3rd and 4th passengers.

These features and fine amenities are standard in the Interior stateroom:

  • Twin beds that convert to a queen size bed*
  • Private bathroom with shower
  • Shampoo, conditioner, body lotion
  • 100% Egyptian cotton linens
